Not your average fitness class
When I first moved to Boston in May of 2008 my friend Christina Lodde would constantly tell me how I should come to her gym and take one of Andy Hayne’s classes. Each night I would see her head out and come back 2 hours later and wonder why anyone in their right mind would want to spend 2 hours at a gym?
I reluctantly tried a class and it hit me; this was not your average fitness class. I was used to same old boring routine of popping my headphones in and hitting the elliptical for 45 minutes and leaving barely breaking a sweat. Andy’s gym was different. The instructors know your name and the other members of the gym quickly became friends. If you missed a day they would ask where you were, which made it really hard to skip class! But it did motivate me to be more mindful of my workout and push harder and harder to change my body. When you start to see the results of losing weight and having more energy and have a gym with good friends and good music waiting for you, it is hard not to be motivated.
After a year at Andy’s gym I was engaged and wanted to take my workout to the next level before the wedding. I started to train with Andy once a week, which quickly became twice a week and really started to see changes in my body and muscle tone. I lost about 10 pounds and at the wedding one of my friends joked that they could probably bounce a quarter off of my rear end!
After the changes I saw in my body before the wedding, I didn’t want to go back. I still train twice a week with Andy, attending fitness classes at his gym 6 days a week. I was so motivated by what had happened to me that I even decided to become an instructor myself. I want to have that kind of impact on someone’s life and change the way people work out - make it fun, make it personal. I have been teaching at gyms around the Boston area trying to spread Andy’s message and make the gym a place that people want to come.
